Facebook Fans spend twice as much as non-fans of the products they “like”

Digital consulting firm Syncapse and research company Hotspex have come up with an empirical formula that puts an average value of $136.38 on the Facebook fans of the site’s 20 biggest corporate brands. Most of that value comes from how much the fans will spend on the brand’s products, with additional dollars coming from customer loyalty, recommendations and earned media.

This graph is compelling, but doesn’t really do much for me.
Someone who buys an excess of the product is more likely to be a Facebook fan because of the frequency with which they consume the product, so this data doesn’t really show me that the presence of the Facebook fanpage causes those who are fans to purchase more product.
“They became a fan and bought more because of that” vs. “They buy a lot of Skittles and decided to become a fan.” I think this is a case of the second, while the former is more forceful and significant.
